Rio Grande Regional Hospital has had a partnership with co-HCA affiliate The Texas Transplant Institute, a Department of Methodist Hospital staffed by transplant physicians and nurses, for several years serving bone marrow and solid organ transplant patients in the Rio Grande Valley. Most recently the two organizations have collaborated through a new clinic where local oncologists can partner with the San Antonio based transplant physicians to provide pre and post-transplant services through the Texas Transplant Institute located both inside Rio Grande Regional Hospital and directly across the street from the hospital in their medical office building.

For pre-transplant and post-transplant care, physicians from the Texas Transplant Physician Group come to Rio Grande Regional Hospital so that local patients can get the tests and services they need without having to travel to San Antonio as often.

The Institute's multidisciplinary team approach to patient care includes highly skilled physicians, advanced practice nurses, transplant coordinators, dietitians, social workers, pharmacists and other caregivers dedicated to the care of transplant candidates, recipients and donors. The patient and his or her referring physician are integral parts of the transplant team.

The institute’s programs are approved and/or accredited by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cell Therapy (FACT), Medicare and Medicaid. Visit Texas Transplant Institute for more information.

Transplant Center Services

Transplants may mean regular visits and checkups with specialists both before and after transplant. Those awaiting transplant can get most of their pre-op testing and exams done at their local hospital (Rio Grande Regional) and continue post-term monitoring here as well. The transplant may take place in McAllen or San Antonio, depending on a number of factors, but much of the longer term care can happen here in the Rio Grande Valley.

That means patients can spend more time at home, near family and friends, as they prepare for and recover from their transplant.

The Texas Transplant Institute is one of the largest blood and marrow stem cell transplant programs in the United States. The TTI satellite campus for bone marrow and stem cell transplants is located at Rio Grande Regional Hospital while clinics for solid organ transplants are provided at McAllen Medical Plaza, a medical office building across from the hospital.

Both provide convenient and efficient service for local transplant patients. Regular outpatient clinics are held at the hospital to evaluate patients without having to travel outside the Valley.

Transplant services include:

  • Adult bone marrow transplant
  • Advanced heart failure and transplant
  • Kidney transplant
  • Liver transplant
  • Pancreas transplant
