Leaders and caregivers at Rio Grande Regional Hospital celebrate the opening of the Outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation program during a ribbon cutting.

MCALLEN, Texas  Rio Grande Regional Hospital celebrated the opening of its new Outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation (Rehab) program with a ribbon cutting on February 24 at McAllen Medical Plaza, expanding heartcare services and helping patients recover safely after a cardiac event.

The program, located at McAllen Medical Plaza, 222 E. Ridge Rd., Suite 207, provides medically supervised exercise, education and coaching designed to help patients rebuild strength, reduce risk factors and return to daily life with confidence.

“This ribbon cutting represents more than a new space — it reflects our commitment to expanding heartcare services and supporting patients well beyond their hospital stay,” said Laura Disque, CEO of Rio Grande Regional Hospital. “Outpatient cardiac rehab is one of the most important ways we help patients move from a moment of crisis into long-term wellness.”

As part of American Heart Month, the hospital highlighted the role cardiac rehab plays in recovery and prevention. Through structured sessions with monitoring and gradual progression, cardiac rehab supports patients as they work on heart-healthy habits, including nutrition, medication adherence and lifestyle changes.

Rio Grande Regional Hospital has already begun serving patients through the program and recently celebrated its first graduates.

The Outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation program is supported by Rio Grande Regional Hospital’s clinical leaders and rehabilitation team, including Dr. Adriana Gomez, chief medical officer, Dr. Christian Assad, cardiac rehab medical director, and outpatient rehab leaders Ken Smith and Hans Cabezuela.
