Diabetes Management Center and Outpatient Nutrition Counseling Services

Diabetes is a life-long health challenge requiring you and your family to take responsibility for maintaining your good health. So whether diabetes affects an adult, child, or pregnant woman, the Diabetes Management Center at Rio Grande Regional Hospital is here to help patients effectively meet those challenges.

We are very proud to highlight that Rio Grande Regional Hospital's diabetes self-management education program has been awarded recognition by the American Diabetes Association in accordance with the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs.

The Team Approach

We operate with a team approach and believe this concept provides the best, most long-lasting results for our patients. Our specially-trained staff works with the patient, family, and physician to personalize each plan. Services include:

  • Inpatient – Essential diabetes management survival skills training
  • Outpatient – Comprehensive self-management programs
  • Diabetes and Pregnancy – Includes pre-conceptual counseling for type 1 and type 2 diabetes, pregnancy counseling for overt type 1 and type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes counseling, and postpartum counseling/diabetes prevention
  • Medical nutrition therapy
  • Nutrition counseling for non-diabetes conditions

Diabetes Self-Management

Our diabetes educators provide inpatient and outpatient management programs designed to help you improve your diabetes self-care skills and enhance the quality of your life. We can help with:

  • Insulin administration
  • Blood glucose monitoring
  • Personal healthcare guidelines
  • Nutrition management

Diabetes Center programs are only available to individuals with diagnosed diabetes and who have a physician's referral.

Diabetes Classes

Rio Grande Regional Hospital offers a variety of diabetes classes in both English and Spanish. For a cost of $20, attendees receive a healthy lunch and feedback via a personalized meal plan.

  • English diabetes classes
    • Every Monday
    • 8:00 a.m. – noon
  • English gestational diabetes classes
    • Every Tuesday 8:00 a.m. – noon
  • Spanish diabetes classes
    • First Wednesday of the month 8:00 a.m. – noon
  • Spanish gestational diabetes classes
    • Second, third, and last Wednesday of the month
    • 8:00 a.m. – noon

Could You Have Diabetes?

More than 16 million Americans are believed to have diabetes, with approximately 500,000 new cases diagnosed every year. Symptoms vary and may not always be apparent, which explains why almost half of people living with disease don’t even know they have it. A simple blood screening is the first step, but here are some common symptoms:

  • Extreme thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Intense hunger
  • Blurred vision
  • Unexplained weight loss or weight gain
  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Itchy skin
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Skin infections
  • Numbness or tingling in fingers or toes
  • Sores slow to heal (especially on the feet)
