A Unique Experience to try out the Technology of the da Vinci® Si Robotic Surgical System at La Plaza Mall
McAllen, TX – Rio Grande Regional Hospital (RGRH) invited members of the media and the community to participate in a unique experience to try out the technology of the da Vinci® Si Robotic Surgical System at La Plaza Mall. The da Vinci® Si Robotic Surgical System which can replace large-incision abdominal surgeries (open surgery) with a minimally invasive approach. “Rio Grande Regional Hospital has partnered with the Texas Institute for Robotic Surgery in Austin, Texas to offer our community excellence in robotic-assisted surgery,” says CEO Cris Rivera. “We are excited to offer demonstrations of the da Vinci® Si Robotic Surgical System.”

Da Vinci surgery has changed the way surgeons perform in the operating room, because it offers precision and control that’s second-to-none. This form of minimally-invasive robotic surgery has also changed the way patients recover, with faster healing, less scarring, a shorter hospital stay, and reduced recovery time. Whereas 6-to-12-inch incisions used to be a necessity, dime-sized incisions now provide the same or better results. And da Vinci continues to evolve – a single-site incision is now possible for certain surgeries. In some procedures, the incision is hidden inside the navel, resulting in a scar-free appearance.
The da Vinci® Si System's features include:

- Enables surgeons to perform delicate and complex operations through a few small incisions
- Dual surgeon-console capability to support training and collaboration during minimally invasive surgery
How It Works
During the procedure, the surgeon sits at a console and uses controls to operate the high-definition viewer to move the instrument arms and camera. The surgeon is 100 percent in control of the da Vinci System during the procedure. In real time, the system translates the surgeon’s hand, wrist and finger movements into more precise movements of the miniaturized instruments inside the patient. The special wristed instruments bend and rotate far greater than the human wrist. As a result, the robotic-assisted approach enables surgeons to operate with enhanced vision, precision, dexterity and control.
